Reduce the risk of cross-contamination with BioCote protected Lockers,
Shelving and Cupboards
The
active ingredient in BioCoteŽ is the element silver in the form of
silver ions. Silver is a natural antimicrobial, which has been used for
many centuries for its abilities to aid in preservation, especially in
water systems. Silver is also currently used in the healthcare sector in
silver coated catheters and wound dressings.
The silver ions are
added to materials at the manufacturing stage. This results in an active
concentration of silver ions on the surface of the product.
The
silver ions cause functions in the bacteria to break down. This results
in the bacteria being unable to reproduce and therefore inhibits
bacterial growth.
Extensive independent testing has been carried
out on a wide range of bacteria including MRSA and e.coli. Products have
been tested for the simulated life of the product /material with no
significant reduction in the antimicrobial performance noted; therefore
the silver ions are effective for the life of the product.
BioCoteŽ forms part of a second line of defence, with the potential for
spreading contamination through manual contact being minimised. Working
with Manufacturers, BioCoteŽ can offer a complete anti microbial
solution incorporating BioCoteŽ technology into a variety of product
surfaces which are effective against a wide range of organisms.
BioCoteŽ advocate that all protected products are cleaned in the
accordance with cleaning regimes and procedures in place.
What is BioCoteŽ? BioCoteŽ is a unique anti-microbial
solution that inhibits the growth of micro-organisms based upon silver
technology
Does BioCoteŽ replace cleaning?
BioCoteŽ is not a replacement for cleaning but a 24hour second line of
defence for regular hygiene practices.
What has BioCoteŽ
been tested against? BioCoteŽ is effective against a wide
range of fungi and bacteria. Examples of bacteria tested against include
Aspergillus niger (black mould), Streptococcus faecalis, Salmonella
enteritidis, Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Escherichia coli 0157 and
Listeria monocytogenes
What about potential resistance?
To date there is no genus or species of bacteria intrinsically resistant
to silver, part of the reason being the fact that multiple binding sites
are used. It has been shown that any resistance would be extremely
difficult to transfer from one generation to the next and is therefore a
minimal concern in the use of Silver.
How long do the
antimicrobial properties last? Products protected by BioCoteŽ
are antimicrobial for the usual life expectancy of the product.
Currently BioCoteŽ have shown efficacy for 25years through simulated
testing.
Will the antimicrobial properties wear out?
BioCoteŽ will not leach from or rub off the surface of the product
Extensive independent testing has been conducted on a wide range of
bacteria. The examples below show the efficacy of BioCoteŽ on a range of
organisms generally considered problematic in hygienic environments.
